Dynah Geissal and Bob Koss aren’t your typical elderly couple. The duo live almost entirely off-the-grid in a log cabin surrounded by Forest Service land outside of Frenchtown, Montana.

Geissal and Koss both worked in wildland firefighting, and Geissal was likely the oldest female wildland firefighter in the U.S., at 80 years old, until the 2026 season, when she could not pass the timed fitness test. It was the first season she missed in 28 years.
